What UI/UX design means in practice

UX is how a product works: the steps a person takes to get something done. UI is how it looks: layout, color, type and buttons. They are different jobs, and a good product needs both.

A pretty screen that hides the checkout button is a UX failure. A clear flow with a cluttered, unreadable layout is a UI failure. We work on both, starting with the flow.

Good design is mostly decisions about what to leave out. We ask what a person is trying to do on each screen, remove what does not help them do it, and make the next step obvious. Text is written in plain language, buttons say what they do, and error messages explain how to fix the problem.

Accessibility is part of this. Readable type sizes, enough color contrast and buttons large enough to tap are not extras. They make a product easier for everyone, including people using a phone outdoors or in a hurry.

Fixing a website or app that people leave

Sometimes the product exists and the problem is that people do not finish what they came to do. Forms get abandoned, carts go unpaid, enquiries do not arrive. We start with a usability review.

• We walk through the main tasks as a new user would.
• We check the layout on small phones, which is where many problems hide.
• We look at forms, buttons, wording and error messages.
• We list the problems in order of importance, with a proposed fix for each.

If your analytics show where people drop off, we use that too. If you have no analytics, we can set them up. Then we make the changes, or give you the list for your own team. Small fixes to a confusing form can matter more than a full redesign.

We also test changes where we can. A clickable prototype shown to a few real users will reveal problems that a design team staring at the same screens for weeks will miss. It is a cheap way to find out before development starts.
